If a minor is traveling with only one parent, what consent documents are needed?
Outbound Team
If a minor (under 18) is traveling with only one parent, most Schengen embassies require formal consent from the non-traveling parent to ensure both parents agree to the trip.
Here’s exactly what you’ll need 👇
✍️ 1. Parental Consent Letter (Notarized)
The non-traveling parent must provide a signed and notarized letter stating that they give permission for the child to:
• Travel to the Schengen Area
• Be accompanied by the other parent (include full name and passport details)
• Stay for the specified travel dates and purpose (e.g., holiday, family visit)
📄 What to include in the letter:
• Child’s full name, date of birth, and passport number
• Details of the accompanying parent (or guardian)
• Travel destination(s) and dates
• Signature of the non-traveling parent
• Date and place of signing
🪪 2. Copy of the Non-Traveling Parent’s Passport or ID
Attach a clear photocopy of the consenting parent’s passport or national ID, showing the signature page.
🧾 3. Birth Certificate of the Child
To prove parental relationship — especially if parents have different surnames or the consent letter is signed abroad.
💡 Special Situations:
• If one parent is deceased, include the death certificate.
• If one parent has sole custody, include the legal custody document or court order.
