QnA Schengen Visa
Are there any exemptions for the Schengen visa fee (e.g., for students, researchers)?
Outbound Team
Yes — certain travellers do not need to pay the Schengen visa fee, and others may receive reduced fees. These exemptions are based on EU regulations and apply across all Schengen countries.
Here’s the clear breakdown 👇
🆓 1. Who is exempt from paying the Schengen visa fee?
The following groups do not pay anything for a Schengen visa:
✔️ Children under 6 years old
Their visa is completely free.
✔️ Students on an official educational trip
If the student is:
• Enrolled in school or university
• Joining an official study trip
• Clearly documented by their institution
The visa fee is waived.
✔️ Researchers traveling for scientific work
Researchers travelling for:
• Academic projects
• Scientific research
• Collaboration with institutes
are exempt from the visa fee.
✔️ Teachers accompanying students on a school trip
As long as they are responsible for the group.
✔️ Certain applicants under EU-related agreements
Example:
• Spouses or family members of EU/EEA citizens (under specific conditions)
Countries with special visa facilitation agreements may also have lower fees.
💶 2. Who pays a reduced Schengen visa fee?
Some nationalities have reduced fees due to EU agreements (mostly €35 instead of €90).
This depends on your passport.
Outbound Singapore always checks whether you qualify for a reduced fee before submitting your application.
📝 3. Important: Visa centre service fees still apply
Even if your Schengen visa fee is waived, VFS/TLS may still charge:
• Service fees
• SMS/Email notification fees
• Courier fees (optional)
These charges are not part of the embassy fee exemption.
💡 Outbound Singapore Tip
