QnA Schengen Visa
Are there costs associated with appealing a visa refusal?
Outbound Team
In most cases, appealing a Schengen visa refusal is free.
However, depending on the country and the type of appeal, you may still face some extra costs along the way.
Here’s the full picture 👇
🆓 1. The appeal itself is usually free
Submitting an appeal letter or “remonstration” to the embassy generally has no fee.
You do not pay an appeal charge.
This applies to countries like:
• Germany
• France
• Italy
• Spain
• Netherlands
• Belgium
You simply follow the embassy’s instructions and submit the required documents.
💵 2. But you may face indirect costs
Even though the embassy doesn’t charge for the appeal, you might spend money on:
✔️ Document translations
Some embassies require translations into their official language.
✔️ Notarisation or legalisation
Certain supporting documents (financial or legal) may need official certification.
✔️ Courier services
If you cannot submit the appeal in person, posting documents may cost extra.
✔️ Legal assistance (optional)
Some applicants choose to hire a lawyer or professional to draft the appeal — this is optional, not required.
🧾 3. If the appeal is rejected, reapplying will cost money
You will need to pay:
• The €90 visa fee again
• Visa center service fees
• Any optional services
The original fee is not refunded.
⚖️ 4. Court appeals may involve fees
A few countries allow you to escalate the appeal to an administrative court if you disagree with the embassy’s decision.
Court fees depend on the country and can be substantial.
This step is only recommended for strong, legally supported cases.
