Is it possible to extend a short-stay Schengen visa while in Europe?
Outbound Team
Extending a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C) while you’re already in Europe is only possible in very limited cases — it’s not guaranteed and usually not encouraged.
🕒 You may apply for an extension only if:
• You have a serious personal reason (e.g., medical emergency).
• There are humanitarian grounds (e.g., cancelled flights due to natural disaster).
• There are strong professional reasons beyond your control.
❌ You cannot extend just to continue traveling or sightseeing. Most travelers must leave the Schengen Area before their visa expires and apply for a new one from their home country.
💡 Tip from Outbound Singapore:
If you anticipate needing more time, plan ahead — apply for a multiple-entry visa or a longer-duration visa before your trip.
