QnA Schengen Visa
Will UK citizens need an ETIAS or a Schengen visa to visit Europe?
Outbound Team
After Brexit, UK citizens are no longer EU members, but they are still visa-exempt for short stays in the Schengen Area.
That means:
• They do NOT need a Schengen visa for short visits
• They WILL need ETIAS once it launches in 2025
Here’s the clear breakdown 👇
🇬🇧 1. UK citizens do NOT need a Schengen visa for short stays
British passport holders can visit the Schengen Area for:
• Tourism
• Business meetings
• Family visits
• Short stays under 90 days in any 180-day period
No visa required — same as today.
🌐 2. UK citizens WILL need ETIAS
Once ETIAS becomes mandatory (expected 2025), UK travellers must:
• Apply online
• Pay a small €7 fee
• Receive digital approval before boarding a flight or entering by land/sea
ETIAS is not a visa — it’s a pre-travel authorisation.
🛂 3. When would a UK citizen need a Schengen visa?
Only in special cases such as:
• Staying longer than 90 days
• Working in the EU
• Studying long-term
• Moving or joining a family member
These require a National (Type D) Visa, not a Schengen tourist visa.
